Open Space Referendum

On November 7th, 2006, East Pikeland residents voted on an Open Space Referendum.  The question asked was whether East Pikeland Township residents would approve a one quarter of 1% increase in their earned income tax to start a fund to preserve open space in the township.  The voters overwhelmingly approve the referendum by a 65% to 35% vote.

Subsequently, on February 6, 2007 the Board of Supervisors passed Ordinance No. 120 to increase the earned income tax by .25% for the purpose of purchasing land or interest in land, including easements and transferable development rights, for protection, preservation and conservation of open space uses in the township.   The Open Space Tax will be in addition to the 1% Earned Income Tax already imposed.  The total tax rate for all residents will be 1.25%.

Berkheimer Associates serves as the tax collector for the township and they will be notifying residents and employers of the earned income tax increase which became effective on February 11, 2007.   Employers not located in the township are not required to withhold the additional tax, but may do so voluntarily.  Share this information with your employer so that they are aware of the new tax.

The township has formed an Open Space Committee that is responsible for reviewing and prioritizing properties that are eligible for preservation.  The Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on how to spend the open space funds.
